Portugal has become one of the most incredible destinations in Europe for elopements. It has everything couples dream about: coastlines, volcanic islands, colorful palaces, wild mountains and breathtaking beaches.

What I personally LOVE about Portugal is how diverse it is. Within the same country, you can exchange your vows on a cliff above the Atlantic, in a mystical forest surrounded by palaces, or next to a volcanic lake in the middle of the ocean. Incredible, right?

These are some of the best regions in Portugal for an unforgettable elopement.

The Azores

My personal favorite! It is an island located in the middle of the Atlantic ocean and when you land there, you’ll immediately feel like you’re completely disconnected from the outside world.

The Azores are famous for their volcanic lakes that are hidden in the mountains. You can also see incredible waterfalls everywhere and sooo much green! Be ready for the adventure because you will be hiking a bit to see the magical views.

So if you’re the type of couple who loves hiking, exploring and being surrounded by nature, the Azores offer some of the most breathtaking scenery you could imagine.

Madeira

Have you ever heard of ”the Hawaii of Europe”? Well, welcome to Madeira!

The island is famous for its rugged mountains, incredible viewpoints above the clouds, ocean cliffs and lush forests. Many elopements here are so cinematic because the landscapes are so grand.

You can start off by saying your vows in the mountains and ending your day on the coast watching the sunset over the Atlantic. How beautiful is that omg!!

Algarve

The Algarve is probably Portugal’s most famous coastline, and for a good reason!

There, the water is more turquoise that every turquoise thing you ever saw in your life! The best thing there in my opinion, is its hidden beaches that you will only find if you hike a bit to a private spot where you will only be with your partner and nature.

So if you imagine exchanging your vows by the ocean or celebrating your elopement on the beach, choose the Algarve!!

It’s also one of the easiest regions to plan an elopement in thanks to its accessibility and warm climate.

Sintra

If you’re dreaming of a romantic, almost magical atmosphere, Sintra is unlike anywhere else.

It’s the city of colorful palaces and ancient castles. You feel like you’re in a movie when you discover and explore this city.

So, Sintra is perfect for couples who want a setting that is historic, mysterious and romantic at the same time. Also, what cooler is that just a short drive away, you’ll find breathtaking ocean cliffs so you can mix city and ocean.

When to Elope in Portugal

One of the reasons Portugal is SO popular for elopements is its climate. The country enjoys mild weather for most of the year, which makes planning much easier for couples.

Spring (March-May)

Spring is a beautiful time to elope in Portugal. The landscapes are green, flowers start blooming and the weather is comfortable without having to deal with the summer crowds.

Summer (June-August)

Summer offers long days (which I love), warm weather and incredible sunsets. It’s perfect for coastal elopements, although some areas can be busier. This is why I always advise my couples to elope during sunrise or sunset to avoid the crowds.

Autumn (September-October)

Early autumn is one of my favorite times in Portugal. The weather is still warm but the crowds start to disappear. And the colors of the trees? omg don’t make me start!!

Why Portugal

There are many reasons couples choose Portugal for their elopement.

First, the landscapes are just incredibly diverse. You can find mountains, forests, cliffs, beaches, cities, and volcanic islands all within the same country.

Second, Portugal is very accessible. Its location make it connected to the rest of Europe and relatively easy to travel around.

And finally, the atmosphere and the people here are very welcoming. You will feel at home the second you enter the country.
