How to make an elopement feel special and personal without guests

23/01/26

One of the biggest fears couples have about eloping is this one: ‘’will it really feel special?’’
And honestly, I can understand that you are scared of feeling lonely without having a ton of guests cheering you up and complimenting you on your wedding day. When you remove guests, traditions, and a big schedule, it’s normal to wonder what makes the day stands out.

The good news? An elopement doesn’t become special because of what you add, but because of what you choose to make it about.

Here are simple ways to make your elopement feel deeply personal and unforgettable.

Simple ways to make your elopement feel yours

Create moments that only you two understand

Your elopement doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s. Think about what you already love doing together. It could be sharing coffee somewhere special, walking without a destination, swimming, hiking, cooking or just sitting and admiring the sunset.

When moments reflect your real life, the day automatically feels personal.

Write vows that sound like you, not like a movie

Your vows don’t need to be poetic or perfect. They just need to be honest. Talk about your inside jokes, your fears, your promises, your everyday life. Those are often the words couples remember the most.

You could:

  • Read a letter you wrote to each other years ago
  • Listen to a voice note you recorded on your phone
  • Write something last minute, without overthinking it

And honestly, you have the chance to say everything you want to say to your partner without being scared of what your aunt or your cousin will think of it. You’ll be alone with your partner, surrounded by nature.

I, as a photographer, usually document this ceremony from far away, to give my couple their space to freely express their feelings to each others. Of course I always do some closeups using my zoom but I never choose a moment where it’s intimate and private.

Choose a location that actually means something to you

A beautiful place is great, but a place that resonates with you is even better.

It could be somewhere you’ve traveled before, somewhere that feels calming, or somewhere that represents a new chapter for you.

When the location connects to your story, the day feels grounded and real.

Turn activities into memories not a checklist

Instead of filling your day with ‘’must-do’’ moments, focus on how you want to feel: excited, emotional, playful, relaxed…

That might look like a picnic, a swim, a helicopter ride, a bumpy jumping activity, a tanning activity…

Really do what you always wanted to do but never had the opportunity to, or something you always do because you love it so much.

Let your outfits reflect your personality

There are no rules when it comes to what you wear: white dress, black dress, hiking clothes, swimsuits, relaxed outfits, barefoot… all of it is valid.

And the cool part is that you don’t have to stay in one look!

You might choose:

  • A dress or suit for the ceremony, then something more relaxed
  • Sneakers instead of heels
  • A jacket or sweater as the light changes

What matters is feeling comfortable and like yourself.

Add one meaningful ritual to the day

This doesn’t have to be traditional. It can be writing letters to each other, listening to a song together, sharing a drink, dance on the sand….

You can also collect some tree leaves (if allowed) from some trees you’ll encounter during your elopement and then frame them and put them in your room.

One small ritual can anchor the entire experience.

Bring one object that tells your story

Objects carry memories in a powerful way.

That could be:

  • A family ring or necklace
  • A bottle of wine from a special trip
  • A disposable/polaroid camera for blurry, imperfect tangible photos

These details don’t just add visual interest, they anchor your day to your history

Create a tradition that’s only yours

Your elopement can start something you keep forever.

For example:

  • Always watching the sunset together on your anniversary
  • Writing one sentence each year in the same notebook
  • Write a letter for your future selves each year
  • Sharing the same drink after saying ‘’yes’’

It becomes part of your story and it makes you remember this unique day every year.

Let go of what a wedding ‘’should’’ be

The fastest way to make your elopement feel special is to stop comparing it.

To weddings you’ve seen, to other elopements, to expectations, to social media…

The moment you allow yourselves to do things your way, the day becomes meaningful without trying.

If you’re still doubting about making your experience fully yours, check my ‘’elopement activities’’ guide, you’ll find a lot of ideas that can make your day extremely fun!

And what’s really cool too, is that if you really want to have some guests with you but also want to be alone, you could expand your elopement for 2 days and have one day being only the two of you, and the other one with your close family and friends.
