Things to know before eloping

25/01/26

Eloping often looks simple from the outside but once couples start planning, they realize there are some things no one really talks about.

So if you have decided to elope but there are some things you’re still not sure about, you’re at the right place. I’ve created this guide to make sure couples are aware of these 10 things that could really be helpful for them as they start their elopement journey.

10 things I wish my couples knew before eloping

Your elopement doesn’t have to be extreme or adventurous

You clearly don’t have to hike for 6 hours, wake up at 4 am, or do something that scares you, to elope. Your day can be calm and relaxing while still feeling special.

Many couples choose locations that are easy to reach but still breathtaking. Although I love a little bit of adventure, it’s completely optional. What matters most is choosing something that feels good for you.

You’ll probably need more time than you think

I know what you’re thinking, ‘’oh she’s a photographer, of course she would want us to choose the longest option’’. But trust me, I’m not telling you this to sell you, I’m telling you this for you to take into consideration some extra time you will need, even if it’s not with me.

Moments pass faster than expected when you’re enjoying yourselves and I promise you, you’ll thank me later when you will realize that getting ready in the morning takes time and you don’t wanna get rushed if you’re not satisfied with the way you look. Its also an important moment for you to call your loved ones, those who could not be there with you.

Adding more time often means less rushing and more presence. Most of my couples later thank me, saying they’re glad they didn’t keep it too short. If you’re still doubting about how much coverage you need to be documented, take a look on these real client timelines: What happens during an elopement? A real timeline example

You can create a full wedding experience, even without guests

An intimate wedding doesn’t mean a short or ‘’less important’’ day.

Of course, bringing some close friends and family can be fun but you can still have meaningful moments, rituals, outfits, flowers and celebrations only the two of you.

Many couples are surprised by how full and rich their day feels. Without guests, you’re actually focused on yourself, on your partner, and on the nature that surrounds you. The experience becomes about depth, not quantity.

Your outfits will probably get dirty, and that’s okay

When you elope, especially in nature, you’re moving, walking, sitting, exploring.
Your clothes might touch sand, rocks, grass, or even get a little wet.

And honestly, that’s part of the experience. You’re not here to keep everything perfect and untouched. You want your outfit to reflect the unique day you just lived and you want to look at your dress and say: wow, what a day it has been!

You’re here to live the day, not protect the outfit

Your family might not fully agree, and that’s okay!

Your number 1 concern might be what will your mother in law think about this choice but at the end of the day, you live for you, and even if not everyone will immediately understand your choice, some people will.

More and more, eloping is becoming common and accepted, so don’t worry! 10 years from now you’ll end up regretting it if you didn’t decide to do it now because you’re scared of people’s opinion.

Choosing to elope doesn’t mean your decision is wrong. What matters most is that it feels right to the two of you.

And if you don’t want to tell your family about this, you can! Check out my resource: how to elope without telling family.

There’s not right or wrong timeline

Your wedding day doesn’t have to follow a traditional structure. You can take your time, move slowly or change plans along the way.

Breaks, pauses, and quiet moments are completely allowed. You’re more flexible and it helps you feel less stressed and less rushed.

Your photos become more than just wedding pictures

Your photos aren’t only about how things looked, but much more about how the day felt. This is why choosing the right photographer for you is crucial. You need to find someone who will capture your emotions exactly how you lived them. For many couples, images become the way they relive their day, that’s why photography often plays a central role in elopements.

You can still include what matters to you

Eloping doesn’t mean removing everything from a traditional wedding day. You get to choose what stays and what goes. Vows, outfits, champagne, music, letters, or symbolic moments are all possible.

Nothing is off limits unless you decide it is. And take my advice, if you don’t wanna get stressed last minute, book your vendors at least 5 months before your elopement day. You’ll feel way more relaxed.

Your outfits don’t have to be traditional

Eloping doesn’t require a white dress or a formal suit. How cool is that?? You can totally wear something simple, elegant, colorful, black, or even something practical. Some couples choose hiking clothes, other a relaxed outfit, others the classical white dress/costume attire. There’s no rule about what a ‘’wedding outfit’’ should look like. What matters is feeling comfortable and like yourselves.

Also, if you decide you want to elope during 2 days, it’s a good way for you to be dressed comfortably on day 1 and classy on day 2!

Eloping gives you way more freedom than you think

When you elope, you’re not boxed into a venue, a strict schedule, or a specific way of doing things. You get to decide where you day happens, how it flows, and what really matters to you. That freedom often feels surprising at first, especially if you’re used to rules and expectations.

But once couples realize they can choose differently, it becomes incredibly empowering. Your wedding starts to feel like something you’re creating, not something you’re fitting into.

Once couples start imagining this kind of wedding, the next question usually comes naturally: ‘’okay… but what can we do during our elopement day?’’ that’s exactly what I talk about next in this article: elopement activities, all the ideas that could fit your vibe to fulfill your magical day.
